Vineyards and Wineries
Tasmania is far from short of vineyards for exploring, but the Derwent Estate Winery is acclaimed for its premier Pinot Noir, having won the producer of the year title in 2011.
This family owned business has been passed down generations since 1913, and is now run by the fifth generation family member, Vigneron Andrew Hanigan. Located just 20 minutes North of Hobart, it serves as a fantastic stop-off point if you’re on the way up to the Derwent Valley or the West Coast.
Derwent Estate products include Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Rose, Pinot Noir and Cabernet/Merlot, all of which can be tasted when visiting the site. The Cellar Door sits inside one of the two traditional 1930s buildings on the estate, and is open during weekdays for visitors to taste, discuss and learn all about the winemaking process. Here you can also buy rare wines that are hard to come across elsewhere.
Opening Times:
10am - 4pm Monday- Friday (Sundays in December and January).
